Introduction – The Book of Colossians

What would you do if someone you cared about got seriously off-track in their beliefs and actions? So much so, that an intervention, or talking-to, is in order.

This is the situation Paul is in when he pens this letter to his friends in Colosse. The newly-formed Christian church in this busy, trading-post town, has gone astray.

In Colossians, Paul reminds his friends that Christ is the center of all things, and His ways are eternal. He derides their hollow and deceptive philosophy which leads them to believe there is a “secret” or “mysticism” concerning God and daily living. Christ is God revealed, he gently explains in this book. No need to search elsewhere.

Take Out the Garbage

When times are hard....when life is uncertain.... when we suffer emotionally, financially, or spiritually....we can start taking on 'garbage' if we are not careful. What kind of garbage?

  1. Blaming others for our 'misfortune(s)'
  2. Envying those who 'seem' to have it better;
  3. Shutting out people who care for us;
  4. Ignoring what is really going on -- the truth;
  5. Doubting our abilities and God-given talents;
  6. Obsessing over 'mistakes' and 'failures'
  7. Worrying about what the future holds for us;
  8. Hoarding possessions--and people--"just in case"
  9. Denying the good that surrounds us;
  10. Refusing to surrender our will to the Lord;
  11. Rejecting daily blessings;
  12. Living a self-centered life;
  13. Looking to others to 'save' us;
  14. Cluttering our surroundings (and our minds) with junk;

GET RID OF THIS GARBAGE...IT WILL ONLY KEEP YOU DOWN! Instead focus on the fruits of the Spirit:

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
Against such things there is no law.
Those who belong to Christ Jesus
have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires.
Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other."

Galatians 5:22-26
Study Description: Chapter 1
A description of this on-line walk through the Book of Colossians;

Scripture -- Colossians Chapter 1
NIV Text with links to other versions;

Study One "Thankful for You"
Reference -- Colossians 1:1-3

  • Lesson 1:  "Hallelujah Anyway" Whatever challenges or concerns we  may have, if we examine our circumstance we will find related blessings.  Use the Hallelujah Anyway chart to document your blessings....

  • Lesson 2:  "Being Thankful for Difficult People" It is easy to love those who make us joyful.  The child who is never in trouble and gets good grades, the friend who is always positive and supporting, the loving parent. But what about those who irk us, or rub us the wrong way? .....

Study Two  "What Have You Heard?"
Reference -- Colossians 1:4-8

  • Lesson 1:  "The world vs. the Lord" We are hearing a lot of "doom and gloom" these days from 'the world.'  The world's message... communicated through the media...is laced with words.....

Study Three "Knowledge of His Will?"
Reference -- Colossians 1:9

  • Lesson 2: "Thy Will be Done"Normally, we only see the first part of this famous prayer, read the entire prayer :"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.        Living one day at a time; Enjoying one moment at a time; Accepting hardships.......

Study Four "Great Endurance & Patience"
Reference -- Colossians 1:10-11

  • Lesson 1: "Have a Cup of Tea."Having a cup of tea is a ritual in many cultures--Asian, Indian, African, European, and even in America!  While coffee drinking conjures up a rush-rush, go-out-and-conquer-the-world image, tea drinking, especially sitting down for a cup of tea, signifies relaxation and appreciation of one's surroundings.  Think about it....
  • Lesson 3:  "Bearing Fruit  What is meant by "bearing fruit?"  This phrase is seen throughout the Bible, in many Scriptures.  What kind of "fruit" are you "bearing?"....
  • Lesson 4: "Taking it Easy" So....You've finally had enough of GO-GO-GO. Your over-scheduled, always in a hurry, always lots to get done, always busy life has drained you of energy.

Study Five "Rescued From Darkness"
Reference -- Colossians 1:12-14

  • Lesson 1: "The Rescuer"  Cinderella is a fairy-tale.  No mortal 'knight-in-shining-armor' is going to swoop down and rescue you whenever you face trials or tribulations.

Study Six "Christ is Supreme"
Reference -- Colossians 1:15-20
